Economic Development for the City of Greenfield

Greenfield is an ever-changing and developing city. As such, business and government leaders need to be responsive to certain dynamics. Economic and physical growth, development, infrastructure, equality, and diversity are all important aspects to consider if we are to enhance the quality of life in Greenfield for all current and future residents and business stakeholders. In order to meet these challenges, the city has put together an effective Economic Development Team headed by Mayor Brad DeReamer and City Engineer Mike Fruth and developed a Strategic Economic Development Plan.

Economic Development Goals include:

  1. Creating long-range 10-year and 20-year comprehensive plans for growth and development to ensure maximum efficiency in promoting businesses and the flow of traffic. This includes determining currently available sites and buildings and perspective sites and facilities.

  2. Attracting new retail, commercial, industrial, and educational businesses to Greenfield.
  3. Evaluating organizations and funding to provide incentives for such development.
  4. Assessing infrastructure needs and providing roads, utilities, and traffic control to planned areas. Work with agencies to provide communication systems as needed.
  5. Assessing current streetscape conditions, landscaping, and signage to improve aesthetics and create marketable areas throughout the entire city. Greenfield is a designated Main Street Community which contributes to the downtown improvement process.

In 2008, the City of Greenfield annexed 126 acres into the city limits for current and future business development. This brings the total of annexed property to 300 acres designed for retail, commercial, and industrial development.

Greenfield saw over 60 new and expanded businesses in 2009. Elanco Animal Health, a division of Eli Lilly and Company, located their worldwide headquarters in a new Research and Development park (Progress Park) at I-70 and State Road 9. Covance, a drug development services company, purchased Eli Lilly's Greenfield business in 2008.
